PhD project: Systemic toxicity associated with metal orthopaedic implants

This multidisciplinary project aims to better understand the relationship between implant-derived metallic debris and the adverse systemic effects reported in a small number of patients (cardiomyopathy, neuropathy and endocrine and blood disorders), as well as exploring the possible genetic factors underlying different responses to metal implants. Results will be used to assess the potential for cobalt, chromium and titanium toxicity, and assist clinicians in the management of symptomatic patients. Key collaborators include the iconic US-based Mayo Clinic, MCR Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge and Diamond Light Source.
